Question: I know this is a bit of a stupid question but how many kilometres between oil changes on my 86 5000 turbo? I run full synthetic
and its mainly highway driving and its got 368000km on it...

Answer: In the USA we usually say every 3,000 miles or 3 months.. which ever comes first.

The conversion from miles to kilometers if I'm not mistaken is:

4827kilometers or every 3 months.


Here is what I was told back in the 90s at auto tech school about oils and their lubrication properties.

organic oil breaks down at 300 degrees F.
semi synthetic breaks down at 400 degrees F.
synthetic breaks down at 500 degrees F.

I personally try to change my oil before 3 months or 3,000 miles.

I use semi synthetic in my Audi 200 Q MC1 engine because I believe the oil gets hotter with my driving style and circulating through my hot turbo.

I recommend making sure that your intake air box and air filter are free of dirt and dust as much of this eventually gets into your oil.

For oil filter I recommend the factory filter. If you want to use a high quality Mobil filter instead it's probably going to be just fine. I do not recommend "cheaping out" on the oil filter as there are many low price brands that do not filter out some of the dirt microns. If you get a chance hold in each of your hands a cheap oil filter and a high priced oil filter. My guess is the quality oil filter will feel heavier as there are more filter screens inside.
