The E stands for Entwicklung, the German word for Development. That's because the E codes are assigned by BMW at the beginning of model development.
The E38 was the 1995-2001 7er and included all models, 740i, 740iL, 750iL. Unlike with the E38s, in 2002 they gave the i a different e-number than the Li.
